We don’t have to tell you that the kitchen is where you spend most of your time—everyone knows the kitchen is the heart of the home—but have you thought about the details your ideal kitchen would include? From functionality to pleasing aesthetics, you want to end up with a kitchen that you will fall in love with.
1. Floor Plan
Make sure you leave yourself enough cooking room. Cooking can be fun if you are set up in a space that works. Set your 3 main components up in a triangle. The refrigerator, the sink and the stove/oven makes up an efficient work triangle. For your layout to be efficient, you should easily be able to move from one to the other without having to walk around anything or go across the room. Also, allow yourself enough working surfaces throughout your kitchen. If you can’t fit one between each area of the work triangle, consider a rolling island that can be moved exactly where you want it.
2. Color Scheme
Think about everything that will end up going into your kitchen, such as flooring, cabinets, and appliances. Make sure you choose a color scheme that will work when your kitchen is finished and all items are in the room.
You don’t want to cook in the dark, so be sure to include enough lighting for your space. Include dimmers, so you can adjust between cooking and socializing. Under cabinet lighting is also a great option, directly illuminating your work surface and creating a nice feel when gathering with friends and family.
There is nothing more frustrating than a disorganized and cluttered kitchen. If you can’t find things quickly or you have to search other areas of the house for them, it can turn cooking a meal into a long and exhausting process. Remember to talk to your designer about maximizing your storage. Be sure you will have enough space for all of the cookware, dishes, and food that goes into your cabinets.
There are many different types and styles of floors to choose from. Hardwood, vinyl, laminate and tile come in all different colors, styles and finishes. Choose one that works well with your floor plan, design, and color scheme.
